Apple not long ago received a enormous disputes regarding in-app purchases by the kids and unaware parents who lost thousands dollars but thanks to Apple to compensated later.
But the reality is this issue will keep taking place very often: as we let our kid to use our iPhone or iPad and within a minute or two, will buy an app, or purchased something via in-app purchase and our credit card is charged.
Although we have some parent controls and also some content restrictions, this post is particularly for switching off three elements:
Installation of apps
- In-app purchases
- Password saving (when you download an app, your iPad will ask for the password every time)
Also, we are considering the chance of taking away your credit card details from iTunes ID so that even when somebody attempts to buy an app, they can not go ahead and purchase the app.

How To Prevent Kids From In-App Purchases On iPhone & iPad
1. Turning off the Installation of Apps:
One of the most easiest way to ensure that the kid does not turn out buying the apps from App Store – or even to download the free one – is to simply turn-on the restrictions for this. How to do:
- Go to Settings → General → Restrictions
- If Restrictions are disabled, enable them. If they’re enabled, you have to enter the passcode. (Forgot restriction passcode? Read this to reset)
- Scroll down to where there’s a switch for Install Apps
- Turn this OFF
The only disadvantage by doing this is that the kids will not be able to download any app even free.
2. Turn-off the In-App Purchases:
More than 70% cases of unintended purchases result from the in-app purchases. This isn’t surprising because the in-app purchases have up to now been a little bit issues of these sort even though Apple fixes this. Turning off the in-app purchases is very easy.
- Go to Settings → General → Restrictions
- Scroll down and turn off In-App Purchases
Once again, this does not avoid the kids from purchasing the apps from app store at all. To stop the whole, there are actually only two extra steps.
3. A Password Lock Required:
There are actually two methods you will be asked for the password each time you want to download any app from App Store. You’ll either be prompted to give the password for each and every download, or you’ll be requested to enter the password one time and which will be validation for only fifteen minutes. In those fifteen minutes, you may download as much apps but you probably will not be asked again for password.
If you just type the password, and the moment your kid just come and to use your device so in next 15 minutes he is free to buy or download and app, that is more spending.
The turn off this:
- Go to Settings → General → Restriction
- Tap on Require Password
- Change it to Immediately
4. And finally Remove the Credit Card Info
And the final step, if you wish to allow your kids to download the free apps only from iPhone or iPad, is this:
- Go to Settings
- Tap on iTunes & App Stores
- Tap on your Apple ID right on top
- Now tap on View Apple ID (and enter the password for your Apple ID)
- Once your Apple ID loads, tap on Payment Information
- In the credit card type, select None
This successfully stops any downloads that belong to purchases. But it’ll still allow the kids to download the free apps. The in-app purchases will be disabled so they will not find a way to do in-app purchases.
